How IP ratings actually work
An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is two digits stamped on a device after the letters "IP" — for example, IP68. The first digit scores protection against solids like dust and sand, from 0 (none) to 6 (completely dust-tight). The second scores protection against liquids, from 0 (none) to 9 (high-pressure, high-temperature jets).
A device with no claim on one axis gets an "X" instead of a number — that means it simply hasn't been tested for it, not that it fails.
IP ratings are earned in controlled lab conditions, almost always with clean fresh water and standardized dust. Real terrain is messier: saltwater is corrosive in ways a lab rarely simulates, fine desert or volcanic dust is finer than the test standard, and temperature extremes aren't covered by IP testing at all.

Will Your Gear Actually Survive That Trip? What IP Ratings Really Mean
I used to think “waterproof” meant waterproof. Then I dropped a “water-resistant” action cam in a river during a rafting trip and watched it die a slow, foggy-lens death over the next three days. That’s when I actually sat down and learned what those little IP codes on the box mean — and honestly, I wish someone had explained it to me before I packed for that trip instead of after.

The Two Digits That Actually Matter
Every IP (Ingress Protection) rating is two numbers stuck together, and each one is answering a completely different question.
- First digit — solids. This is about dust, sand, and general grit. It runs from 0 (no protection at all) to 6 (completely sealed against dust).
- Second digit — liquids. This one’s about water, from 0 (none) up to 9, which covers high-pressure, high-temperature jets.
So when you see IP68, you’re really reading “6 for dust, 8 for water” — two separate scores, not one combined grade. I think this is where most people trip up. A gadget can be a beast against sand and mediocre against water, or the other way around.

You’ll also see an “X” sometimes — like IPX7. That doesn’t mean the device fails at dust protection. It means the manufacturer simply didn’t test for it. No claim either way.
Why This Trips People Up in the Real World
I’ve made this mistake myself, and I see it constantly in gear forums: someone assumes their phone is “basically indestructible” because it’s IP68, then it dies after a day at the beach.
Here’s the thing — IP testing happens in a lab, with clean fresh water and standardized dust. Real environments are messier:
- Saltwater is corrosive in ways a freshwater dunk test doesn’t capture. Salt crystals work into seals and speaker grilles and slowly wreck gaskets over time.
- Desert sand is finer than the dust used in most lab tests, and wind drives it into every seam it can find.
- Cold weather isn’t covered at all. IP ratings say nothing about temperature. Your gear might be perfectly sealed and still shut down on a freezing summit because the battery chemistry just can’t keep up.
Quick gut-check: If you just got back from the ocean or a lake, rinse your “waterproof” gear in fresh water before you put it away — even if it’s rated for full immersion. It’s a thirty-second habit that saves you from a slow salt-corrosion death six months later.
Matching the Rating to the Actual Trip
I’ve started thinking about this less as “is my gear waterproof” and more as “does my gear match this specific environment.” A few real scenarios:
- Jungle or rainforest trekking: You want at least a water rating of 4 (splashing), and honestly I wouldn’t go in without 7+ if there’s any chance of a river crossing.
- Desert or dune travel: Dust rating is everything here — 5 or 6, no exceptions. Anything lower and fine sand will eventually find its way past the seals.
- Beach and marine trips: You need strong scores on both digits at once, plus the freshwater-rinse habit above. One good number without the other leaves a real gap.
- Mountain and snow conditions: Water resistance matters, but don’t forget the cold-battery issue I mentioned. Keep a spare battery somewhere warm.
- Everyday commuting: Most modern phones clear this bar without even trying. Rain splash and a bit of city grit just isn’t a demanding test.
